Airflow modeling is at the heart of what we do here at our Singapore office in BroadTech Engineering.
Our professional Fluid Dynamics simulation engineers at BroadTech Engineering are highly trained and experienced in using the BIM HVAC Tool as well as OpenFOAM simulation software to conduct CFD simulation.
This CFD analysis helps to assess the building environment in terms of its Passive ventilation Design and HVAC design capabilities.
Our CFD consultants work closely with key stakeholders involved in green building projects to implement design solutions that enhance building energy efficiency.
These stakeholders include Building developers, Building owners, Professional Engineers, Project managers, Mechanical engineers, facility managers and others.
Environmental Sustainability of Building Design
As the rising global demand for limited energy resources is getting more unsustainable on the environment, green design will likely be made mandatory by the government in the near future, become legislated and forced by market demands to develop better solutions.
Pioneers and leading companies in the building development industry are already preparing for this inevitable evolution by working with CFD companies to design environmentally sustainable building solutions.
Through CFD modeling and Airflow simulation, an order of magnitude more testing and experimentation can be done virtually for a fraction of the cost. This allows Engineering development teams to quickly vary numerous parameters to identify the best combination of sustainable building design configuration, minimize cost and achieve maximal performance.
Market Leading engineering companies are systematically using Computational fluid analysis to test their product prototype designs virtually against environmental conditions that would be experienced throughout the product lifecycle to ensure that engineering product behavior will satisfy the needs of end users.
The continuous exponential increase in computational power coupled with high-efficiency simulation solvers allows Engineering simulation to accelerate towards this drive towards more sustainable building designs without causing any negative impact on project cost or time to market.
Urban Climatic Mapping
At a larger regional scales, airflow modeling and Fluid dynamic analysis can be applied to applications in urban climatic mapping to facilitate governmental agencies to achieve a more sustainable urban planning and engineering development of building infrastructure.
This urban micro-climatic mapping is base on air temperature prediction/simulation model commonly adopted by organizations which use Building information modeling (BIM) to work on the science and technology of Green Building research.
BCA Green Mark certification
BCA Green Mark certification is a regulatory benchmarking scheme that New building development is mandated to pass.
One of the key design standard criteria that new building development have to fulfill is that it meets the minimum natural ventilation performance requirement.
The evaluation of the building’s natural ventilation performance is carried out by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation.
CFD Simulation for Building Natural Ventilation Design
Using CFD simulation, we are able to engineer an optimized building passive design Strategies that facilitates natural building Ventilation and promotes Thermal Comfort of occupants in a building indoor environment which is subjected to Singapore’s Tropical weather conditions.
Through the use of CFD airflow modeling, we are able to ensure an even temperature and air distribution in the occupied space with PMV (Percentage Mean Vote) and PPD (Percentage People Dissatisfied) index in accord with BS EN ISO 7730.
In addition, we are also able to optimize the underfloor system using computational fluid dynamics simulation to achieve an occupant thermal comfort level in accordance with, SS553, SS554 and ASHRAE recommendations.

Overview of CFD Simulation Workflow Process
Airflow modeling simulation allows building design to be optimized for more energy efficient airflow paths without the need to rely on fabricating and testing of physical 3D prototype mock-ups of the space being designed.
Using airflow simulation, air flow rates in the building can be determined based on the building design geometry and existing heat load emitted from human occupants and equipment.
1. Define Project Objectives and Outcome
This involves a preliminary discussion with clients to define the Engineering problem and formulate the deliverable outcome from the CFD consulting and CFD simulation.
2. 3D CAD Modeling
Accurate full-scale 3D CAD Modeling of Building Design Geometry
3. Pre-Setting up to the simulation analysis solver
This involves the application of an appropriate Boundary Conditions and restraints which is based on the adoption of a reasonable assumption in the actual physical environment.
4. Meshing Computational Model
Preliminary Meshing typically involves the strategy of using a simplified 3D Model to quickly identify any issues with convergence or singularity. Subsequent meshing using the CFD simulation software can be made more detailed by incorporating local mesh refinement in areas around features of interest
5. Post-Analysis and Presentation of CFD Results
After the CFD computer simulation is completed, the simulation results data obtained is analyzed.
Base on this analysis, we can propose design recommendations to further optimize the airflow performance of the building.
