- Cut cost and time-to-market
As covered earlier about the business and design challenges you are facing as a result of these trends, such as:
- Reducing emissions and energy consumption by optimizing thermal efficiency and developing powertrain alternatives.
- Ensuring that electric vehicles meet the demands of customers by extending their range and improving vehicle reliability.
- Differentiating yourself in the competitive market and securing a long term business future by building a reputation as an innovation and technology leader. To do so, you must be able to look at trade-offs of new innovative systems as well as ensure system durability under normal and extreme driving conditions. And of course, While balancing performance, the new innovative technology must be brought to market, quickly, and efficiently while reducing the cost for production.
These can all be summarized by the over-arching need to discover better designs, faster – and this can be accomplished by driving innovation through simulation. And of course, that’s why we’re here today: to share some insights about simulation and how, through using it in new and deliberate ways, it is helping companies achieve their innovation targets.

Featured CFD Automotive Case Studies: CNH Industrial – Using Predictive DEM and Thermal Management to improve harvester design
Designers of commercial vehicles are under ever-increasing pressure to cut program development times and costs while at the same time meeting increasingly rigorous demands of reduced emissions and fuel consumption. While meeting these depends, off-highway manufactures need to develop vehicles for harsh environment with regards to temperature/dirt extremes. While also being flexible for design variants to meet their client’s requirements.
Off-Highway IEMs are meeting these demands using engineering simulation. Through a digital prototype, OEM’s can quickly evaluate different design changes, before expensive hardware has been built.
CNH Industrial is a global leader in a wide variety of vehicles from agricultural to construction equipment. They have been witness to change in the industry where 10 years ago, it was more just curiosity, to the past few years, simulation is helping CNH design products which meet and exceed the requirements.
Before CFD, CNH had no choice to rely on experimental testing, and process of trial and error. The success relied heavily on the experience of their engineering teams. Using this, they were able to design/build some high-quality machines, the cost of making a wrong design decision would only be exposed by testing, late in the design cycle was very high. By working with simulation, and testing teams together, CNH was able to reduce their time to market and costs, while enabling to bring new innovative ideas to push new frontiers of the commercial vehicle design.
Over the past decade, CFD simulations at CNH has involved from being an interesting curiosity to occupying a central role in the commercial vehicle development process.

Trends Driving Innovation in Today’s Vehicle Market
Stricter Regulations
Paris agreement on climate change signed by 195 countries commits the world to reverse GHG emissions upward trend.
Electrification
Electric vehicles (HEVs & EVs) share could range from 10-50% of a new vehicle sold in 2030.
Reduce Cost & Time – Maintain Brand Value
In a highly competitive market adoption of right technology and innovation differentiates those that thrive from those that fail
Taking a general look specifically at the Ground Transportation Industry today, here are some of the key factors that are making product innovation critical in order to remain competitive.
The Paris agreement signed by 195 countries commits to reversing GHG emissions. About a quarter of the emissions come from the transport industry, and without changes in transportation, this reverse trend will not occur. Stricter regulations are planned well into the future, making it a difficult challenge for new competitive vehicle designs Conventional combustion engines alone will not be able to achieve the new emission levels. By optimizing the performance of the current combustion engines, we may be able to achieve target goals for 2020. But to go beyond those limits, new innovative ideas need to be implemented to achieve future regulations.
As Elon Musk has demonstrated, vehicle electrification is one of the most important technologies to help meet future demands as it is a key technology which could reverse GHG trends. However, it will be critical that new electric vehicles meet the demands of their customers as well. This involves understanding trade-off between vehicle driving range, to passenger thermal comfort, as well as ensuring battery/electronics cooling. This requires studying multiple systems working together to provide optimum performance and comfort to the passengers and driver.
Vehicle electrification are a real disruptive trend in today’s market. While incorporating this new and innovate technology, OEM’s also need to look to bring down costs, to make sure the vehicles are affordable to the competitive market. Tesla’s drive to reduce price of Lithium batteries, while improving energy output is helping to bring the cost down. But this is one portion of the overall costs. The other major cost is the design time to build/test different systems to make sure high performance is achieved for both normal and extreme drive conditions.
Each one of these factors has a major impact on the organization’s bottom line one way or another. Whether it is the requirement to upgrade existing technologies, increase R&D budgets, or look at ways to reduce costs throughout the design process without compromising quality. On the other hand, each one of these trends is also making innovation increasingly important to keep your competitive edge.
Innovate or Die
We are at an exciting time in business and engineering. New and innovative products and business models are being delivered at an ever-increasing pace, and organizations – both new and old – live or die based on how they adapt to these competing products and ideas. I think Elon Musk hit the nail on the head when he said: any company that stays stationary will be passed up by their competitors.
Alright, so the solution is to NOT stay stationary, but to adapt…to innovate.
