Chemical Reaction Simulation of Coal Combustion in Calciner

Objective: To develop CFD model in fluent for Coal combustion in Calciner using commercially available chemical reaction simulator.
Approach/Methodology:
1. Actual Process data (Boundary conditions for CFD study, Coal analysis, Particle size etc) collection from plant
2. 3D Geometry preparation: Drawings collection, a study of drawings and 3D Geometry of Calciner created using Ansys DM. Confirmation of Geometry by comparing it with photos received from plant
3. Meshing: Using ICEM the whole geometry is divided into several million small volume elements (mesh/grid).
In this case of chemical process simulation, the whole geometry is divided into more than 4 million volume elements. Prism, Tetra, and Hex meshing done
4. FLuent Case file and solver: Steady-state – k-epsilon turbulence model, Solid particles – Discrete Phase Model (Petcoke and kiln feed), Heat transfer – Enabled, Radiation – Discrete ordinate model, Species Transport – Finite Rate /Eddy Dissipation, Combustion model considered as Finite Rate chemistry/Eddy dissipation model
5. Fixing of solver parameters
To solve the complex mathematical equations for the fluid flow, like Navier-Stokes equation and turbulence models, solver parameters need to be given for convergent solution. These parameters when given correctly facilitate the problem-solving process of the chemical process simulation software, similar to those used in a finite element analysis.
6. Preparation of Case file
Once all the physics and model parameters are identified, all the above ingredients are combined to prepare a case file for the simulation.
7. Case file simulation
Case files prepared in the Ansys Fluent software are solved on the 128 processor cluster as mentioned above.
8. Post-processing or analyzing results
The results file generated is analyzed using the post-processing tool provided by the ANSYS Fluent software.
Conclusion:
CFD model developed successfully and results are in good agreement with actual plant data

Chemical Reaction Simulation of CO2 Fire Suppression

Overview
This combustion analysis simulation involves the simulation of Fire suppression behavior by Co2 Mixture in a room by using Multi-phase models.
Methodology
The whole combustion modeling work is done in the ANSYS platform, where, the designing is done in the Space-Claim and meshing is processed in ANSYS Meshing. The Solver part is processed in ANSYS-Fluent. In this fire dynamics simulation (FDS) project we have chosen the Mixture model from the multiphase model using transient state k-e model.
Outcome Results
Through this project, our simulation consultants (IL) managed to captured the suppression of oxygen levels in the fired room by inputting the co2 through vents and suppressed the fire level by balancing the volume fraction of co2 and o2 in the room.

Mathematical Modeling for Solving Electrochemistry

Objective:
Develop mathematical Modeling for solving Electrochemistry simulation (IL) of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell.
Methodology Approach:
The Mathematical model was developed to model complex electrochemical reaction simulation and various other physics happening at sub-micron level with the help of experimental results.
Conclusion:
The developed model was validated and provides significant value addition to the enterprise.
