This automated design exploration process can work with any physics and with any of your simulation tools, whether they’re commercial or internal legacy tools. These tools can be 1D, 2D, or 3D and can be based on FEA, CFD, MBD, or any other methodology. You don’t need to change your simulation tools; you just need to connect them together effectively with HEEDS.
Here’s an example of those four enabling technologies of HEEDS applied to automotive bumper design for crash safety.
An automotive component supplier desired to automate the process of exploring bumper design in an effort to identify the lowest mass design which satisfied all design and performance constraints.
Their overall parametric simulation model contained over 60 variables and 9 mandated FEA crash load cases, along with corresponding performance constraints for each load case.
To prove that automated exploration would yield a high return on investment, they embarked on a subset proof-of-concept demonstration that involved 20 design variables and 2 load cases.
HEEDS automated a process involving NX CAD for 3D modeling, LS-DYNA for crash simulation, and Python for model execution and post-processing.
After 100 evaluations across 12 cores, HEEDS discovered a design that reduced overall bumper mass by 32% over the baseline design.
Note that, unlike with previous design exploration techniques, there’s no need with HEEDS to simplify the problem or reduce the number of design variables. In fact, the more variables that you include, the better chance that you have of finding truly innovative solutions.
