1. FEA Simulation Objective:

The main objective was to improve the design of glass fiber reinforced polymer pipes to be used in the oil and gas industry. In oil and gas sector, impact damage from falling tools or debris can be catastrophic and expensive.
Therefore, the research was carried out using FEA and artificial intelligence techniques like Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Differential Evolution algorithms to optimize the pipe design against the low velocity impact. FEA analysis that was performed for this work was a dynamic analysis and was carried out using ABAQUS commercial FEA software. While the optimization algorithm using ANN and DE techniques was developed and code was written in MATLAB software.
A patent was applied and has been granted by US patent office for this research work.
 
Our FEA Consultant developed a reduced order approach for performing the finite element simulations for power grids. The FE code was coded using MATLAB and various reduced order modeling methods were developed and coded in MATLAB.

Design, Analyse, structural Optimization and Calibration of 6-Component External Wind Tunnel Balance

 

1. FEA Simulation objective:
Objective of project was to design, analyze, optimize & calibrate a system which measures the aerodynamic forces and moments acting on wind tunnel testing models like scaled models of aircraft, spacecraft, Missiles, automobiles and locomotives.
2. FEA Simulation Methodology and Approach:
A six-component platform balance was designed and fabricated in the dept. of Aerospace Engineering, IISc, Bangalore, for measuring aerodynamic forces and moments on models. This balance utilizes load cells for transducing forces into electrical signals. The platform balance consists of a levelled platform constrained by six load cells for measuring forces in vertical, axial and sideward directions. The present work includes the detailed study of wind tunnel balance types, design concepts, the derivation for calibration, transformation and user matrices and establishing the calibration procedure to existing 6-component platform balance at IISc open circuit wind tunnel.
The work also includes FEM analysis of 6-component external force balance, optimization of force measuring elements .To study the static and dynamic coupling of balance when model is attached to force balance by studying individual and coupled behaviour and finally Validating the dynamic characteristics in wind tunnel for a typical model and study the error in responses of individual components with increased loads. The present study uses the CATIA to be modeling the force balance configuration, Ansys Mechanical software to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to find forces developed in the load cells and optimization of force measuring elements. MATLAB is used during the generation of calibration, transformation and user matrices.
 
3. Outcome & Conclusion:
  1. The calibration data showed that the balance behaves in a linear fashion in the range of loads applied. The transformation matrix obtained was almost a diagonal matrix as expected. Percentage error is less than 1% of maximum load in each component.
  2. The balance can be utilised to determine aerodynamic loads within the specified range of forces and moments.
  3. The FE Analysis shows that, stresses and deformations of the designed external balance are within the limits.
 
 

Fire safety Simulation of shelter department

 

1. FEA Simulation objective:
Our FEA Consultant have been assigned under the fire safety and shelter department in SCDF. We have been trained to use modelling software to analyze on the spread of fire and smoke logged (thermal) situation in various environment including enclosed office and open space. The simulation enable us to revisit the current fire code and decide if improvement is required to ensure occupancy load, fire preventive measures (fire rated door of various resistance/positioning of heat/smoke detectors/fire hoses) and response time needed meets the standard.
2. FEA Simulation Methodology and Approach:
First of all, we need to input the fixed variables such as the dimension of the rooms, selection of the materials for the building, and also looking into some of the fixed variables such as wind factor, occupancy load during office hour etc. Next, we look into potential hazard within the office where fire may ignite (source) and run the simulation to see the time frame prior the arrival of SCDF or CERT team to rectify on the issue.  

3. Outcome & Conclusion:

At the end of the simulation, we also provide analysis on the damage at various time frame and re look into a balanced minimal safety installation features to ensure the safety of the individual in the mentioned environment. Last but not least, we also need to consider the occupants age, mobility and health condition. The results shown was also discussed with other agencies including BCA, society of engineering, HDB, and EMA etc to seek their expertise.
