FEA Analysis of the overall response of the system

 

1. FEA Simulation Objective:

For jack-up, the traditional methods of separating the environmental loading, structural, and geotechnical modeling components into individual analyses have proven inadequate in analyzing the overall response of the system. 
So, two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) computer programs have been developed to determine the responses of jack-ups; however, the limitations are still reported. For instance, no soil was considered in the 3D model due to the use of work strain hardening plasticity theory. Consequently, jack-up resting on heterogeneous soil inducing punch-through accidents during preloading may be one of the most difficult areas for researchers. Therefore, to enhance the safety of jack-up, the development and application of the skew-boundary condition (SBC) to the 3D finite element interface model for soil-jack-up interaction are proposed in this study.
 

2. FEA Simulation Methodology and Approach:

To achieve this work, the combinations of the analysis approaches of (1) the linear elastic jack-up with (2) the nonlinear soil obeying Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion in conjunction with the SBC simple interface and(3) the nonlinear solution techniques based on load- and displacement-controlled methods are conducted. 
All simulations are carried out by using the author’s subroutines in conjunction with the structural dynamic toolbox (SDT) in MATLAB. The verifications are performed by computing shape factor sand charts of the bearing capacity factors (BCFs (eg., Nc, Nq, Nγ)) of the strip, circular, ring and conical footings resting on soil with the different combinations of the friction angle ranging from 5 to 45 degrees and cone apex angle from 30 to 180 degrees in 2D and 3D. Moreover, the applications of the proposed interface model to the three-leg and one-leg jack-up resting on homogenous and non-homogenous soil are also performed by computing the BCFs and investigating the soil remolding around spud cans. It is revealed that the present results are in good agreement with the existing results; however, they are significantly greater than those of SNAME (The society of naval architects and marine engineers). Therefore, it is found that SNAME’s solutions are more conservative.
