The framework operates at two scales: the mesoscale (yarn level) where yarns intermesh into knitting patterns and the macro-scale (fabric level) where the repetition and the geometric variations of the patterns form a fabric.
On the mesoscale, representative volume elements consisting of single interlocked yarn loops, modeled as geometrically exact, elastic Simo-Reissner beams, are homogenized to compute their effective mechanical properties. A B-Spline response surface model is employed to represent the nonlinear orthotropic constitutive behavior on the macro-scale, which is discretized using an Isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shell formulation. Stitch values and stitch types are parametrized as design variables of the mesoscopic model and response surface constitutive model for the optimization procedure for the mechanical behavior of 3D knitted textiles.
