Our FEA Project is on multi-scale modelling and simulation framework for prediction of the mechanical behaviors of 3D knitted textiles, which is integrated into a digital workflow for optimal design and manufacture of functionally graded, knitted textile structures. The framework operates at two scales: the meso-scale (yarn level) where yarns intermesh into knitting patterns and the macro- scale (fabric level) where the repetition and the geometric variations of the patterns form a fabric.
On the meso-scale, representative volume elements consisting single interlocked yarn loops, modeled as geometrically exact, elastic Simo-Reissner beams, are homogenized to compute their effective mechanical properties. A B-Spline response surface model is employed to represent the nonlinear orthotropic constitutive behavior on the macro-scale, which is discretized using an Isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shell formulation. Stitch values and stitch types are parametrized as design variables of the mesoscopic model and response surface constitutive model for the optimization procedure for the mechanical behaviour of 3D knitted textiles.

Elastic properties of the composite are calculated using finite element analysis and the results are validated from the analytical data. The micromechanics approach is used in the modeling of the composite and The periodic boundary conditions are applied and elastic properties of the composite are calculated.
