Featured Case Study Using HEEDS Optimization Software: Cooling Jacket Gasket Hole Design
Comparison of DOE and Direct Search Approach
Challenge:
- Minimize pressure drop across water jacket
- 24 gasket hole geometric design variables
Constraints:
- Peak head temperature < 250 °C
- Cylinder to cylinder variation in peak liner and dome temperatures < 10 °C
- Peak liner temperature < 200 °C
- Peak coolant temperature < 150 °C
- Peak velocity of coolant in head and block water jackets < 10 m/s
Results:
- 20% fewer design evaluations compared to DOE (200 vs. 250)
- 10% reduction in pressure drop relative to DOE-optimized design
- 7% reduction in max head temperature
- 16 feasible designs in highly constrained design space
With this case study, we hope to Show the result of applying HEEDS to challenging powertrain problem. It also serves to Confirm that fewer simulation evaluations are needed with HEEDS direct search than with traditional DOE/RSM methods
You might be thinking: “Of course you can search directly without simplifying the problem and can find better designs, but you’d need many more simulation evaluations than is practical.”
But this is simply not true with HEEDS. You actually need less than you typically need to perform a Design-of-Experiments and build an accurate response surface model (DOE/RSM).
Consider the problem shown here of finding the best gasket design for an engine cooling jacket. There are 24 design variables involving the location and size of gasket holes. This real problem from an auto OEM has a number of very challenging constraints involving peak temperatures and velocities.
The auto OEM needed 250 evaluations in a DOE approach to building a reasonable response surface that was subsequently used to find a good design.
HEEDS was then applied to the same problem. HEEDS needed only 200 evaluations to “directly” search the design space effectively and it found a design that was 10% better in terms of pressure drop and 7% better in terms of max head temperature. In other words, HEEDS needed 20% fewer design evaluations to find a 7-10% better design than delivered by the traditional design exploration approach.

To sum up, the enabling technologies of HEEDS, Let me explain a bit more about our technologies and how they enable you to find better designs, faster. The HEEDS Design Exploration Platform is applicable to any industry and includes portals, or interfaces, to standard commercial CAD and CAE software. It also includes a Python programming language for extensibility and advanced visualization tools.
As described earlier, HEEDS includes four enabling technologies. The first is process automation. HEEDS provides a drag-and-drop interface to make it simpler for engineers to define any process workflow. They can include internal and commercial modeling and simulation tools based on 1D, 2D, or 3D paradigms.
Once the workflow is defined, the user can push a single button to evaluate one complete virtual prototype.
Next, HEEDS makes it simple for the user to assign each of the tasks in the process workflow to the most appropriate local or remote computation resources and operating systems. So, for instance, single or multi-core Windows computers can be assigned to CAD and less-intensive CAE simulations, while multi-core Linux clusters or cloud resources can be assigned to compute-intensive simulations. HEEDS works across operating systems and networks to orchestrate all task execution and to manage data interaction.
