Non-linear dynamic FEA Analysis of composite four-bar mechanisms

 

1. Simulation objective:
To study geometrically non-linear dynamics of composite four-bar mechanisms.
2. Methodology/Approach used
Our FEA Consultant demonstrated the importance of a geometrically nonlinear cross-sectional analysis of composite beam-based four-bar mechanisms in predicting system dynamic characteristics. A powerful mathematical tool called the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) is used for dimensional reduction. Finally, the behavior of the system is observed by using commercial software (I-DEAS+NASTRAN+ADAMS).
3. Outcome & Conclusion:
The geometrical and material parameters are selected in such a way that they satisfy all the three-criteria based on strength, stiffness, and stability. Lay-up optimization is done by varying lay-up angle 0 degrees through 90 degrees with an increment of 5 degrees for better system dynamic parameters. The component-laminate load-carrying capacity is evaluated using the Tsai-Wu-Hahn failure criterion for various lay-ups. It is also observed that the mechanism as a whole fails due to maximum resultant moment, Mr=0.47Nm which occurs at t=0.005sec.
