Numerical Estimation of Frigate Class Ship Air Wakes

The initial phase of CFD Simulation studies covers the numerical and experimental investigation of bare ship airwakes. Afterward, the investigations of the coupled air wake flow pattern of ship airwaves and simplified helicopter downwash at various ship-helicopter take-off/recovery locations over the flight deck were studied.
 
Finally, the third phase of the CFD Consulting investigation includes the fuselage body along with the ship and rotor downwash. During this course of action, Our CFD Consultants keenly involved in the computational modelling of different aspects of ship-helo dynamic interface problem including the understanding of ship design/hydrodynamics, air-water interference modelling by Volume of Fluid (VOF), unsteady ship-helicopter aerodynamics and their impact on rotor blade (Multiple Reference Frame model, and Fluid-Solid interaction). For computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis modeling, the commercial CFD Software package Ansys Fluent has been used.
Computational modeling has been done in two steps.
Firstly, the steady Fluid flow phenomenon has been modeled in Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation using the RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes) approach at the initial phase of the Fluid Flow Simulation investigation.
Later, the unsteady flow phenomena have been modeled by URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes), SAS (scale adaptive CFD simulation) and DES (Detached eddy CFD Analysis) approach.
 
On the experimentation side, as part of the CFD Consultancy scope of work, the model testing measurements have been conducted in a wind tunnel through Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Multi-Hole Probe (MHP).
Based on the overall investigations the major conclusions from the CFD Modeling Analysis areas;
  1. A suitable cost-effective, preliminary model-scale design tool: Simplified Dynamic Interface (SDI) has been developed and proposed by our CFD Company to assess the Ship-Helicopter Dynamic Interface (DI) at the design stage (prior risky sea trials).
  2. A set of design criteria has been proposed by our CFD Engineers to grade a particular combination of ship and helicopter DI for ensuring minimum standards of safe helo operations for a naval ship.
  3. Suitable active/passive flow modification device has been proposed for tackling with coupled Ship-Helicopter air wakes characteristics for safe onboard helicopter operations.
