FEA of the static deflection and twist of the symmetric wing box under tip loading

 

1. FEA Simulation objective:
The objective for the second project was to perform FEA of the static deflection and twist of the symmetric wing box under tip loading.
 
2. FEA Simulation Methodology and Approach:
Firstly, find the shear location referring to the datum case, where the shear center is located when the twist value around the z-axis is nearly 0. Laminate stacking sequences and stiffness properties for the datum case is a balanced stacking sequence (A16=A26, D16=D26). Then use the same location to apply the load on the test case, which results in different vertical displacement and twist, thus the stacking sequence for the test case is unbalanced.
 
3. Outcome & Conclusion
For both the datum case and test case, comparing the laminate stacking sequence and ABD stiffness properties, the difference was minor, proved the results were accurate.
 
 

Design and buckling analysis of blended wing body

HCF and LCF evaluation of Muffler-Turbo Assembly structure

 

1. FEA Simulation Objective:
HCF and LCF evaluation of the Muffler-Turbo Assembly structure and recommend changes for durability where cracks are observed in welds during testing trials.
 
2. FEA Simulation Methodology and Approach:
Worked on Thermo-mechanical structural analysis of muffler-turbo assembly with the transient thermal application on notch changes and transient vibration analysis by applying time-dependent turbo excitation. Our FEA Consultant used Hypermesh for pre-processing and ANSYS solver for simulation of structural integrity. Our FEA Consultant worked using FEMFAT on LCF (Low Cycle Fatigue) with transient thermal simulation with Coffin-Manson evaluation criteria and on HCF (High Cycle Fatigue) with vibration analysis simulation.
 
3. Outcome and Conclusion
 In LCF, fatigue margins are good and meeting the required criteria. But, Fatigue safety at the toe of the weld are lows with thermal residual stresses in HCF evaluation where cracks are observed. Design iterations are carried out to fix the issue by changing weld locations from the high-temperature zone.
 
 

Stress Analysis of Cooling Fan

1. FEA Simulation Objective:
Description: Material property assigned as composite aluminum. The cooling system design to get engine heat release curve either from heat-conducting requirements. To find the maximum heat rejection point at the maximum torque point is considered for severe cases. The maximum heat generated by the data is 25kw. The Cooling fan is verified
with composite aluminum material in different fin thickness maximum up to 0.15mm. Post processes the
results for energy balance, structure stability, displacement with planes. Check the Fan Fins
failure for the specified yield limit.
 
2. FEA Simulation Methodology:
  1. Pre- Processing: Material and Element properties for linear static analysis problems which its behaves stress are independent of elastic modulus.
  2. I will understand the degree of freedom for choosing an element type solid section/shell section based on size f problem which has control of translation and rational behavior of an element.
  3. Mesh conservatively: Check simulation goes with less amount of mesh size to solve quickly.
  4. Perform Equilibrium checks: Our FEA Consultant will always double-check the Applied loads  & boundaries with my reaction force using simple bending equations.
  5. Understandings of deformed shape-mechanism:
    un-connected regions ,incorrect material property,incorrect loads & boundary,incorrect contacts interactions,rigid body mechanisms.
  6. Singularity checks:
    Ensure the model applied with material property and restrained six-degree rigid body motions in boundary and loads
  7. Software warning: monitor the solutions whether converging or diverging.
  8. Solutions: Compute the unknown values of the primary field variables

 

3. Outcome & Conclusion
Post processes the results for energy balance, structure stability, displacement concerning planes. Check the Fan Fins failure for the specified yield limit.
