FE simulation models of rail and train vibration


1. FEA Simulation Objective:
Develop FE models for simulation of the dynamic behaviour of the railway track system
2. FEA Simulation Methodology and Approach:
A 3D FE model of a railway track system was built using ANSYS Workbench 18.2. The contact between rail, sleeper and ballast subgrade were modelled using spring elements. Rail-pad was modelled as a mass-less series of springs – dampers connected along the total contact area in between the rail and the sleepers. The sleepers are modelled as rigid elements connected by spring-damper. The ballast was modelled as separate vibrating mass connected by spring-damper coupled together vertically and horizontally while only the stiffness and damping effects of the subgrade was considered. The stiffness of the spring elements used were determined using laboratory experiments and on-site experiments. Modal and harmonic analysis were performed with relevant boundary conditions to determine the eigen/natural frequency and mode shapes. Parametric analysis was carried out by changing the contact stiffness of the spring elements between the track elements to investigate its influence on dynamics of the system.
3. Outcome & Conclusion
From the FE analysis detailed study of Eigen frequencies, Eigen modes and vibration analysis, of an in-situ railway track system for SMRT corp. have been carried out.
