Long-term ecological, water and sediment quality monitoring and numerical modeling of the seawaters around Singapore

 

This CFD Consulting project is part of the PUB seawater environment impact assessment program. This CFD Consultancy study aims to quantify the impact on the environment of sewage discharge from some plant. A commercial CFD software – MIKE by DHI – is adopted to carry out the numerical investigation.
The hydrodynamic module of MIKE is used to simulate the tidal flow in the seawaters around Singapore. The water quality module of MIKE is used to investigate the water quality in the seawaters around Singapore. The water quality parameters considered in the Fluid Dynamic Simulation study are Enterococci, Faecal Coliform, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate, Dissolved Oxygen, Chlorophyll-a, Total suspended solids.
The numerical baseline Fluid Flow Simulation results without sewage discharge are validated by the data from the monitoring station. Then the numerical CFD Modeling results of adding sewage discharge are compared with the baseline to show the environment impact of the discharge.
Our CFD Consultant simulated the fluid flow through different types of spiral casings of a Francis turbine in my CFD consultant Ph.D. for designing optimal spiral casing using surrogate models (approximation models). The finite element method is used for the discretization of governing equations. Eulerian velocity correction scheme is the solution technique used as part of the CFD Services provided. We found that decelerated type spiral casing with an elliptical cross-section as optimal spiral casing for Francis turbine. I used the in-house code for this. I also used Ansys Fluent for this.
In our current CFD Consulting company, our CFD Engineer simulated the fluid flow through different moisture separators to obtain better moisture separators by comparing their performances. 
We used Simcenter STAR CCM+ and Ansys CFD Flow Analysis tool for this purpose. Finally, we designed good separator using CFD Flow Simulation results and then tested it experimentally and validated the results
 
 

 

Water Treatment CFD Simulation Studies to study the effectiveness and optimization of trapped flotsam collection

 

Simulation Objective

In this CFD Analysis Consultancy project where we were appointed the CFD Services companies to perform the Computational Fluid Analysis, the proposed concept is to dislodge flotsam that has accumulated at walls or trapped at locations between pillars and behind staircases and move it towards the craft scoop. One possible solution is to use water jets to move the trapped flotsam and pumps to create a localized suction current towards the scoop. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations performed by our Fluid Dynamics Company as part of our CFD Analysis Services provided are being used initially to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed design and to identify features that can be optimized

Methodology/Approach Used:

This Numerical approach adopted by our CFD Research and Consultancy Department used a multi-phase VOF model to track the free surface and dynamic mesh model with 6DOF to trace the motion of the floating bodies

Outcome/Conclusion:

CFD Simulation studies are ongoing but some preliminary findings are as follows
The flow profile created by thrusters mounted just below the free surface is more efficient as compared to mounting the nozzles on board of the vessel
A secondary suction pump is required to force the flotsam into the scoop when the flotsam reaches the vicinity of the vessel
